Abstract

A family of Al-rich ZSM-5 zeolites with Si/Al = 8 ± 0.5 was prepared according to abiomass-mediated supramolecular approach. A combination of advancedcharacterisation techniques and periodic density functional theory (DFT)calculations unraveled the purity and stability of un-expected Al-enrichedZSM-5 structures, hence allowing to cross the frontier of Si/Al lower limit. Inaddition, these Al-rich ZSM-5 zeolites demonstrated high catalytic activity inn-hexane cracking and methanol conversion into hydrocarbons, being in line withthe presence of numerous Brønsted acid sites. © 2018 The Royal Society ofChemistry.

Abstract

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a key role in controlling energy metabolism in response to physiological and nutritional status. Although AMPK activation has been proposed as a promising molecular target for treating obesity and its related comorbidities, the use of pharmacological AMPK activators has been met with contradictory therapeutic challenges. Here we show a regulatory mechanism for AMPK through its ubiquitination and degradation by the E3 ubiquitin ligase makorin ring finger protein 1 (MKRN1). MKRN1 depletion promotes glucose consumption and suppresses lipid accumulation due to AMPK stabilisation and activation. Accordingly, MKRN1-null mice show chronic AMPK activation in both liver and adipose tissue, resulting in significant suppression of diet-induced metabolic syndrome. We demonstrate also its therapeutic effect by administering shRNA targeting MKRN1 into obese mice that reverses non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We suggest that ubiquitin-dependent AMPK degradation represents a target therapeutic strategy for metabolic disorders. © 2018, The Author(s).

Abstract

Increased fatty acid (FA) is often observed in highlyproliferative tumors. FAs have been shown to modulate the secretion of proteinsfrom tumor cells, contributing to tumor survival. However, the secreted factorsaffected by FA have not been systematically explored. Here, we found thattreatment of oleate, a monounsaturated omega-9 FA, promoted the proliferationof HepG2 cells. To examine the secreted factors associated with oleate-inducedcell proliferation, we performed a comprehensive secretome profiling ofoleate-treated and untreated HepG2 cells. A comparison of the secretomesidentified 349 differentially secreted proteins (DSPs; 145 upregulated and 192downregulated) in oleate-treated samples, compared to untreated samples. Thefunctional enrichment and network analyses of the DSPs revealed that the 145upregulated secreted proteins by oleate treatment were mainly associated withcell proliferation-related processes, such as lipid metabolism, inflammatoryresponse, and ER stress. Based on the network models of the DSPs, we selectedsix DSPs (MIF, THBS1, PDIA3, APOA1, FASN, and EEF2) that can represent suchprocesses related to cell proliferation. Thus, our results provided a secretomeprofile indicative of an oleate-induced proliferation of HepG2 cells. © 2018,The Author(s).

Abstract

We propose a novel application of diffuse correlationspectroscopy to evaluate microvascular malfunctions of muscle tissue affectedby hyperglycemia and determine their correlation with the severity of diabeticneuropathy at a later stage. Microvascular responses of the thigh muscle andthe mechanical pain threshold of the hind paw of streptozotocin-induced type Idiabetic rats were continuously monitored once per week for 70 days.Significantly decreased baseline blood flow and reactive hyperemia responseswere observed as early as 1 week after hyperglycemia induction. The reactivehyperemia response at 2 weeks of hyperglycemia was highly correlated with themechanical pain threshold at 8 weeks, at which time a decreased pain thresholdwas statistically confirmed in hyperglycemic rats relative to controls. © 2018Optical Society of America.

Exceptional points by coupling ofmodes with different angular momenta in deformed microdisks: A perturbativeanalysis

Abstract

Recently, it has been shown numerically and by a semiclassical approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 093902 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.093902] that second-order exceptional points can appear in the spectrum of weakly deformed microdisk resonators by coupling of optical modes with different angular momentum. Here, we use a perturbation theory for weak boundary deformations to derive an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian from which we obtain analytical formulas to describe the formation of second-order exceptional points in such systems. The theory is extended to third-order exceptional points and confirmed by full numerical calculations. © 2018 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Flying Ad hoc Network (FANET) is a newresource-constrained breed and instantiation of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET)employing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as communicating nodes. These latterfollow a predefined path called mission to provide a wide range of applications/services. Without loss ofgenerality, the services and applications offered by the FANET are based ondata/content delivery in various forms such as, but not limited to, pictures, video, status, warnings, and so on. Therefore, a content-centric communicationmechanism such as Information Centric Networking (ICN) is essential for FANET.ICN addresses the problems of classical TCP/IP-based Internet. To this end,Content-centric networking (CCN), and Named Data Networking (NDN) are two ofthe most famous and widely-adapted implementations of ICN due to theirintrinsic security mechanism and Interest/Data-based communication. To ensuredata security, a signature on the contents is appended to each response/datapacket in transit. However, trusted communication is of paramount importanceand currently lacks in NDN-driven communication. To fill the gaps, in thispaper, we propose a novel trust-aware Monitor-based communication architecturefor Flying Named Data Networking (FNDN). We first select the monitors based ontheir trust and stability, which then become responsible for the interest packetsdissemination to avoid broadcast storm problem. Once the interest reaches dataproducer, the data comes back to the requester through the shortest and mosttrusted path (which is also the same path through which the interest packetarrived at the producer). Simultaneously, the intermediate UAVs choose whetherto check the data authenticity or not, following their subjective belief on itsproducers behavior and thus-forth reducing thecomputation complexity and delay. Simulation results show that our proposal cansustain the vanilla NDN security levels exceeding the 80% dishonesty detectionratio while reducing the generated end-to-end delay to less than 1 s in theworst case and reducing the average consumed energy by more than two times. ©2018 by the authors. Abstract

Growing competition among manufacturing businesses andthe advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has meant that many countriesare conducting various research projects to understand how to introduce andpopulate smart factories. Smart factories are expected to provide a way of solvingthe manufacturing industries' complex problems, to take a role in breakthroughsin factories and to carry on a sustainable business. Smart factories arecurrently in the introduction stage, so we should follow up on the majoritiesand check their tendencies. However, smart-factory research is aninterdisciplinary field that should be studied by researchers with diversebackgrounds in various domains. Thus, studying the past and present overallresearch trends of smart factory studies is required for their successfulintroduction and sustainable research. In this study, we explored the researchtrends of smart factories in both international and specifically Koreanresearch, as an example of a nation case, to determine the major researchdirections. We determined trends using latent semantic analysis, which is aknown topic-modeling technique, and analyzed the trends with regression-basedmethods. As a result, we could read the clear trends by analyzing existingstudies related to smart factories. In addition, it is possible to compareresearch trends in Korea and international research trends for the commonlyappeared topics, such as 'ICT' (Information and Communications Technology) and'R & D (Research and Development)/Technology Innovation'. We expect thatthe quantitative analysis results and suggestions presented in this study canbe used to formulate strategies for the future diffusion of smart factories. ©2018 by the authors.

HierarchicalNickel-Cobalt Dichalcogenide Nanostructure as an Efficient Electrocatalyst forOxygen Evolution Reaction and a Zn-Air Battery

Abstract

A unique three-dimensional(3D) structure consisting of a hierarchical nickel-cobalt dichalcogenide spinelnanostructure is investigated for its electrocatalytic properties at benignneutral and alkaline pH and applied as an air cathode for practical zinc-airbatteries. The results show a high oxygen evolution reaction catalytic activityof nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet arrays grown on carbon cloth (NiCo2S4 NS/CC)over the commercial benchmarking catalyst under both pH conditions. Inparticular, the NiCo2S4 NS/CC air cathode shows high discharge capacity, anarrow potential gap between discharge and charge, and superior cycledurability with reversibility, which exceeds that of commercial preciousmetal-based electrodes. The excellent performance of NiCo2S4 NS/CC in waterelectrolyzers and zinc-air batteries is mainly due to highly exposedelectroactive sites with a rough surface, morphology-based advantages ofnanosheet arrays, good adhesion between NiCo2S4 and the conducting carboncloth, and the active layer formed of nickel-cobalt (oxy)hydroxides duringwater splitting. These results suggest that NiCo2S4 NS/CC could be a promisingcandidate as an efficient electrode for high-performance water electrolyzersand rechargeable zinc-air batteries. © 2018 American Chemical Society.
